Tooth Extraction in Roseville, NSW

Woman holding her mouth in pain, Roseville NSWAt Roseville Dental and Implants, we always aim to help you achieve and maintain optimal dental health and keep your natural teeth for as long as possible. However, circumstances sometimes warrant a tooth extraction to protect your health. If you find yourself in that position, we are here to help with comfortable and stress-free tooth extraction.

When Do Wisdom Teeth Require Extraction?

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, arrive behind your second molars around the ages of 18 to 25. Most people don't have the space in their mouths to successfully support wisdom teeth, and that's why dentists typically recommend removing them.

Here are some additional reasons Dr Yang may recommend wisdom tooth extraction:

  • Brushing and Flossing: Due to their location far back in your mouth, wisdom teeth are difficult to keep clean with routine brushing and flossing, increasing your risk of developing problems like tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Impaction: Some wisdom teeth remain impacted or stuck beneath the gumline. This can cause discomfort and an infection.
  • Crowding: Wisdom teeth may erupt at odd angles that could cause damage or crowding to your other teeth and negatively impact tooth alignment.

If you or your child need a wisdom tooth extraction, Dr Yang and her team can help. We make the process smooth and anxiety-free, providing support throughout your recovery.

Post Tooth Extraction: Tips for a Speedy Recovery

We provide gentle tooth extractions in Roseville, and your dentist provides comprehensive aftercare instruction. Below are a few tips to get you started.

Follow Your Dentist's Instructions

Tooth extraction recovery is fairly prompt, but it's important to follow all aftercare instructions to ensure ease of recovery. If ever you're unsure, call a friendly team member.

Avoid Tobacco in All Forms

Tobacco use can slow your recovery time by restricting blood flow to the extraction site. It can also dislodge the healing blood clot, leading to a painful issue called dry socket.

Avoid Using a Drinking Straw

The sucking motion required to drink liquids through a straw can also dislodge the healing blood clot, hampering your recovery and leading to a dry extraction socket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our team supports you throughout your recovery when you have a tooth extracted. We'll send you home with specific instructions for your care, but here are some general tips and guidelines to remember.

After Care for Tooth Extraction

Immediately after your surgery, you can control bleeding by biting down on gauze. Dr Yang will direct you on how to manage pain with prescription-strength or over-the-counter medication. We recommend that you rest as much as possible during the first few days after surgery.

Stick to soft foods consumed at room temperature for the first few days. Hot temperatures could irritate your extraction site. Here are some ideas for comfortable foods to eat:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Soup
  • Smoothies
  • Oatmeal
  • Applesauce

Things to Avoid for 72 Hours After Surgery

Avoid using a straw or smoking cigarettes for at least 72 hours after surgery, which can dislodge the blood clot protecting your extraction site from an uncomfortable situation called dry socket.

It's also important to avoid vigorous exercise or activity for the first few days after surgery. Taking plenty of time to rest and heal will help you have a smooth and comfortable recovery.

We always encourage our patients to contact our Roseville dental clinic if they have questions or concerns about their tooth extraction or recovery.

When Do We Recommend Tooth Extraction

Dr Yang only recommends removing a tooth as a last resort or if we've exhausted other treatment options. An extraction is sometimes necessary to protect other teeth from infection or damage, and it's in the best interest of your oral health.

Some of the circumstances in which Dr Yang might recommend a tooth extraction are:

  • Extensive tooth decay
  • Untreatable tooth infection
  • To prepare for dentures
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Severely cracked or fractured tooth

It's a good idea to consider replacing a tooth as soon as possible to protect your dental health and smile. Dr Yang will be happy to discuss tooth replacement options with you to ensure your continued oral health.

Gentle Dental Care: When Wisdom Teeth Need Extracting

Wisdom teeth come in years after your adult teeth, usually in the late teens or early twenties, and are referred to as third molars. These teeth are located at the back of the mouth, and you may have four or fewer. You don’t need these teeth to chew food or enjoy a full smile.

Sometimes, wisdom teeth erupt without complications, but when there are issues, it is usually due to the following:

  • Partial Eruption
  • Encroachment on Other Teeth
  • Brushing and Flossing Difficulties
