Orthodontics for Kids: What You Should Know

At Roseville Dental and Implants, we understand that you want the best for your child, including a healthy smile.

Early interceptive orthodontics in Roseville, NSW, helps your child enjoy that healthy and beautiful smile from the very start. Through early monitoring (and intervention as needed), your child can sometimes avoid braces altogether or spend a shorter time in orthodontics. Early treatments also promote healthier smiles.

Early Interceptive Orthodontics

Your child’s dentist in Roseville, NSW, pays close attention to tooth development, including how adult teeth will eventually fit on the gums. We aim for a straight appearance with no overlapping. We also watch for bite issues, including overbites and underbites.

Bite misalignment, even when not overtly noticeable, can lead to premature tooth wear and tear and even impact jaw joint health, which can be painful.

An overbite means the upper teeth overshoot the lower teeth when the mouth is closed. With an underbite, the opposite is true. For a lifelong healthy and comfortable smile, the teeth should always come together when the mouth is closed.

Orthodontic issues can also impact speech development and lead to mouth breathing (instead of nasal breathing), which promotes tooth decay.

Yes, it’s true! Early intervention is not limited to smile beauty. It also considers your child’s long-term oral health.

Orthodontic Treatments for Your Child

Orthodontics may include expanders and traditional braces.

Expanders gently widen the jaw to accommodate adult teeth better and prevent overcrowding and overlapping. They can also aid in proper breathing and jaw development.

Expanders may be:

  • Schwartz Expander — A partially removable appliance worn according to the dentist’s directions and adjusted on schedule.
  • Banded Expander — This oral appliance widens the jaw slowly as you adjust it over time. It relies on adjustment bands cemented to the teeth.
  • Bonded Expander—This device is similar to a banded expander but is used for more complex or diverse dentation needs. It is bonded directly to the teeth.
