How long do dental inlays and onlays last?

At Roseville Dental and Implants, we use ceramic porcelain for our inlays and onlays. How long your restoration lasts depends largely on how well you care for it. With the right care, a porcelain onlay or inlay can last 10-20 years.

Caring for Porcelain Dental Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are easy to care for, as you'll brush and floss around them as you would your natural teeth.

Here are some other tips for caring for your long-lasting dental restorations:

  • Avoid hard or sticky foods — Biting directly into hard foods could crack or damage your inlay or onlay, while sticky foods could pull it out of your tooth.
  • Wear a nightguard — A nightguard protects your natural teeth and dental restorations from the damage that occurs with tooth clenching or grinding (bruxism).
  • Consistent dental checkups — Routine exams with your dentist every six months protect your natural teeth and restorations.
  • Commit to excellent home care — Daily brushing twice per day and flossing once will protect your smile and restorations.
