There are a few things to avoid after a filling to give the restoration the best chance of setting properly and to protect the treated tooth while it heals.
What to Avoid Eating After a Dental Filling
The most important step in tooth filling aftercare is to avoid eating while your mouth is still numb. When you cannot feel your teeth and soft tissue properly, you risk biting your cheek, tongue or lip without realising it.
Once the numbness wears off, avoid chewing on the treated side for the rest of the day. This gives the filling time to fully harden and bond to the tooth. Eating on the opposite side after a dental filling is fine, but stick to softer foods for the first 24 hours.
You should also avoid hard or sticky foods like nuts, toffee and chewing gum for at least a day or two. These can pull at or crack a new filling before it has fully set.
Signs to Watch For After a Filling
Some sensitivity to hot and cold is normal for a few days after a filling. If it lasts longer than a couple of weeks or if you notice pain when biting down, it's best to contact your dentist. These may be signs that the filling needs a small adjustment.
